During more than a month, eight Kennedy Lugar Youth Exchange and Study 2013 scholarship winners were attending training seminars. The aims of these seminars were to strengthen their capacities in English language and to be well prepared for a successful exchange year. These events took place in iEARN-SchoolNet-Cameroon office in Douala city and in the Bilingual High school of Dschang. On the eve of their departure for the USA, a ceremony of presentation of the these students finalists winners to Cameroonian authorities and the Embassy of the USA, this ritual event since 2010, took place on August 1st, 2013, in the Hotel Marie Louise to Dschang.

Under the patronage of the Divisional Officer of Menoua Division represented by his first assistant, this ceremony knew among others the participation of a strong delegation of the Embassy of the USA in Cameroon conducted by the cultural officer of the Embassy of the USA in Cameroon, in the presence of the Departmental Delegate of the Secondary education of Menoua Representing the Minister. Let us note that parents of the students-winners had assaulted the conference hall of this Hotel from the first hours of the morning.

In spite of the heavy rain which watered the city of Dschang this morning, the ceremony began at 10:39 am with the arrival of the First Assistant Divisional Officer of the Menoua division, representing the Divisional Officer. He was accompanied by the Departmental Delegate of Secondary Education of Menoua Division.

The objective of this event was to give the practical modalities of YES Program scholars journey to the parents and relatives especially, Because students have received all trainings about their obligations and rights during more than a month. During this working session, the coordinator of the program in Cameroon, Mr Donfack François, in his speech Thanked the present authorities and clarified the contents of this exchange program He drew the attention of the audience on the presence previous YES program scholarship winners 2012 whose presentations were of a major importance for all. Mr Donfack François could not stop honoring American Department of State for granting of these stock exchange scholarships which from six at first are eight today. He also thanked Cameroonian students for their good behavior while on program in the USA. To end his comment, the Coordinator of iEARN-SchoolNet-Cameroun expressed the profound gratitude of all the team of this program to Cameroon Government, Through the Ministry of the Secondary Education, for his constant support.

The cultural Officer of the Embassy of the USA in Cameroon, Mr Jonathan Koeler, spoke to congratulate students YES scholarship winners for their bravery As well as the team of Coordination of this program in Cameroon. He reassured the winners parents on the fact that this program is effectively under the supervision of the American Department of State And especially clarified that this institution always make sure for students safety and self-fulfillment in host families. He presented life in the USA while describing to all some practical modalities Altogether, He insisted on the truthfulness of the contents of the rights and duties of students as described by the coordinator.

An American who previously won a similar exchange program called, Nina, at present working as assistant in the Embassy of the USA in Cameroon shared her experience participants

The Departmental Delegate of the Secondary education, in his speech, greeted the diligence with which this program is conducted He reassured one more time the participants on the fact that the MINESEC took all the necessary measures for the smooth running of this program. To students winners, he recommended them to be good "ambassadors" of Cameroon in their host families And to respect all the program instructions to protect the places of those who will come after them, and especially to continue to benefit from the follow-up and from the support of this program The representative of the MINESEC did not miss to greet the presence of the delegation of the Embassy of the USA and the Representative of the Menoua Divisional Officer. To end he congratulated one more time finalists students for their bravery before wishing them a good stay in the USA.

Altogether, this ceremony is very important because it allows parents of the program scholarship winners to exchange with the authorities of the land of welcome of their children And to make sure that their children will return to them in one year in better conditions.

Some YES Alumni gave their feeling after one year spent in the USA

Paola WOUAPPI : During the academic year of 2012-2013, I had the opportunity of spending a year in the United States of America, and came back less than 2 months ago. I really loved travelling because it was the discovery of another world locally called ‘the country of my uncle Sam. I discovered so many things, made many friends and experienced a lot of things. My year went so well that if I could start back, I will do it without hesitations. Also, the year spend in the US opened my eyes on my own country which made me love more Cameroon If I can’t go back there, true I will be sad but it won’t affect me that much.

Joseph Lambe : Good morning my experience in the USA was very good. I had a lot of great and unforgettable things. I spent an awesome time with the friends I made there, and now that I am back to Cameroon, I hope I could return to see all my lovely friends and people I left there. If I can speak of what disturbed me a bit is that in my host town I was one of the few black so that disturbed me a bit. But with the help of an awesome family I had and great friends, all those worries disappeared.

Susy Kenclé : I have only one thing to say about my year spent in America , it was the best year of my life because it taught me a lot of things about Americans, my country and myself. I became more open to others and I can now easily adapt to all situations.

Stéphane Kamtchuing : I have the opportunity to spend a year in America My Year Was very fantastic because I learned a lot of new things in general this year opened my eyed on Cameroon and other countries.

Paul Nguimeya : I had the chance to participate in the YES Program. I was really glad to discover a lot of new things. I had the pleasure and chance to spend my time there in two host family which helped me to appreciate different point of view of those different families I was being helped by a lot of friends that I made during my time there. And I still have a very good relation with them even know that I am really far from them.

Les lauréats 2013 du programme iEARN SchoolNet-Cameroun en route pour les USA

Pendant plus d’un mois, les huit lauréats 2013 du programme Kennedy Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (KL-YES) étaient en séminaire de renforcement de capacité en langue anglaise au bureau de iEARN-SchoolNet-Cameroon à Douala et au Lycée Bilingue de Dschang. A la veille de leur départ pour les USA, une cérémonie de présentation des lauréats aux autorités camerounaises et à celles de l’Ambassade des USA, devenue rituel depuis 2010, a eu lieu le 1^er Août 2013, à l’Hôtel Marie Louise à Dschang.

Sous le patronage du Préfet de la Menoua, représenté par son premier adjoint, cette cérémonie a connu entre autres la participation d’une forte délégation de l’Ambassade des USA au Cameroun, conduite par Monsieur L’attaché culturel de l’Ambassade des USA au Cameroun, en présence du Délégué Départemental des Enseignements Secondaires de la Menoua, Représentant le Ministre des Enseignement Secondaires. Notons que les parents des lauréats avaient pris d’assaut la salle de conférences de cet Hôtel dès les premières heures de la matinée.

Malgré la forte pluie qui a arrosé la ville de Dschang en cette matinée, la cérémonie a commencé à 10 h 39’ avec l’arrivée du Premier Adjoint Préfectoral de la Menoua, Représentant le Préfet empêché, accompagné par le Délégué Départemental des Enseignements Secondaires de la Menoua.

L’objet de cette rencontre était de donner les modalités pratiques de ce voyage aux parents surtout, puisque les boursiers ont eux le temps de bien s’imprégner de leurs obligations et de leurs droits pendant plus d’un mois. Au cours de cette séance de travail, le coordonnateur du programme au Cameroun, Monsieur Donfack François, a, dans son allocution, remercié les autorités présentes et s’est fait le devoir de restituer le contenu des échanges avec les lauréats 2013 pendant plus d’un mois de stage. Il n’a pas manqué de souligner à l’attention de l’assistance la présence des Lauréats 2012 dont leurs témoignages étaient d’une importance capitale tant pour les parents des nouveaux lauréats que pour les lauréats eux-mêmes. Monsieur Donfack François n’a pas tari d’éloges au Département d’Etat Américain pour l’octroi de ces bourses qui, pour un effectif de six au départ se retrouvent à huit aujourd’hui, ceci grâce à la bonne conduite des boursiers camerounais aux USA. Pour terminer son propos, le Coordonnateur de iEARN-SchoolNet-Cameroun a exprimé la profonde gratitude de toute l’équipe de ce programme au Gouvernement camerounais, à travers le Ministère des Enseignements Secondaires, pour son soutien constant.

A la suite de M. Donfack, l’attaché culturel de l’Ambassade des USA au Cameroun, Monsieur Jonathan Koeler, a pris la parole pour féliciter les lauréats pour leur bravoure, ainsi que l’équipe de coordination de ce programme au Cameroun. Il a rassuré les parents des lauréats sur le fait que ce programme est effectivement sous la supervision du Département d’Etat Américain et surtout de l’attention que cette institution accorde à la sécurité et à l’épanouissement des enfants une fois envoyés dans les familles d’accueil. Il a présenté en bref aux lauréats la vie aux USA tout en leur donnant quelques modalités pratiques. Dans l’ensemble, il a insisté sur la véracité du contenu des droits et devoirs des lauréats présentés par M. Donfack.

Une américaine bénéficiaire d’une bourse d’échange similaire, Nina, actuellement assistante à l’ambassade des USA au Cameroun a partagé son expérience avec les lauréats.

Le Délégué Départemental des Enseignements secondaires, dans son discours de circonstance, a salué la diligence avec laquelle ce programme est conduit. Il a rassuré une fois de plus les participants sur le fait que le MINESEC a pris toutes les dispositions nécessaires pour se rassurer du bon fonctionnement de ce programme. Aux lauréats 2013, il leur a recommandé d’être de bons « ambassadeurs » du Cameroun auprès de leurs familles d’accueil et de respecter toutes les consignes pour préserver les places de ceux qui viendront après eux, et surtout pour continuer à bénéficier du suivi et du soutien de ce programme. Le représentant du MINESEC n’a pas manqué de saluer la présence de la délégation de l’Ambassade des USA et du Représentant du Préfet de la Menoua. Pour terminer il a une fois de plus félicité les lauréats pour leur bravoure avant de leur souhaiter un bon séjour aux USA.

Dans l’ensemble, cette cérémonie est d’une importance capitale puisqu’elle permet aux parents des lauréats d’échanger avec les autorités de la terre d’accueil de leurs enfants et de s’assurer que leur progéniture retournera à eux dans un an dans de meilleures conditions.

Les lauréats 2012 ont chacun donné son sentiment après un an passé aux USA

Paola WOUAPI : j’ai eu l’opportunité de passer un an aux USA, pendant l’année scolaire 2012-2013, je suis rentré au Cameroun il y un mois et demi. J’ai beaucoup aimé ce voyage parce que ça a été la découverte d’un nouveau monde, communément appelé « pays de l’oncle Sam ». J’ai découvert beaucoup de choses. Je me suis fait beaucoup d’amis. J’ai eu à expérimenter beaucoup d’autres choses. Mon année là-bas s’est très bien passée au point où s’il fallait recommencer, je le ferais sans hésitation. D’autre part, cette année passée aux USA m’a ouvert les yeux sur mon propre pays et j’ai appris à aimer le Cameroun. Si je n’ai plus l’occasion d’y retourner, je serai triste c’est vrai, mais ça ne va pas beaucoup m’affecter.

Joseph Lambe : Bonjour, mon expérience aux USA a été très bonne. j’ai eu beaucoup de grandes choses inoubliables. J’ai eu à passer de très bons moments avec les amis que je me suis fait là-bas, et maintenant que je suis de retour au Cameroun, j’espère que dans les années à venir, j’y retournerai pour revoir ce beau monde que j’ai laissé. Si je peux parler de ce qui m’a stressé, c’est tout simplement que dans ma ville d’accueil j’étais presque le seul noir et je me suis senti un peu mal à l’aise au départ, mais avec l’accueil très chaleureux que j’ai eu avec les camarades, j’ai très vite oublié cet aspect.

Susy Kenclé : Je n’ai qu’une seul phrase à dire pour mon année passé aux USA : c’était la meilleure année que j’ai jamais eue, parce quelle m’a appris beaucoup de choses sur les américains, sur mon pays et sur moi-même. Je suis désormais plus ouvert aux autres et je peux m’adapter rapidement à toute situation.

Stéphane Kamtchuing : J’ai eu l’opportunité de passer une année en Amérique. Mon année a été très fantastique parce que j’ai appris beaucoup de nouvelles choses, dans l’ensemble cette année m’a ouvert les yeux sur le Cameroun et beaucoup d’autres pays.

Paul Nguimeya : j’ai eu la chance de participer au programme YES. J’ai eu beaucoup de plaisir de découvrir de nouvelles choses. J’ai eu la chance de passer mon séjour dans deux familles d’accueil, ce qui m’a permis d’apprécier les points de vue de ces différentes familles. J’ai eu le soutien de beaucoup d’amis que je me suis fait là-bas, dont certains continuent à m’écrire depuis mon retour.
